Rising Sun Records Presents
The Story Of Tribe
Fast-forward In 1974, my life took an unexpected turn with a call from Big Dee Ervin, a producer at
ABC-Dunhill Records. He invited me, Earl J. Foster Jr., to contribute to a track’s fade-out, which surprisingly outshone the main song. Dee humorously named the record “Coke” and the artist “Tribe,” a decision that remains a mystery but was typical of his playful nature.
As the lead vocalist, I became Tribe by default, seizing the opportunity with a promise from Dee for a recording contract if the record succeeded.
To my astonishment, the record charted quickly, leading to a meeting with Otis Smith, the R&B division’s Vice-President, and a contract with ABC-Dunhill Records. I renamed my band from “The Fourth Parallel” to “Tribe,” and we embarked on a journey filled with concerts and TV appearances.
However, controversy over the name “Coke” led to a renaming to “Smoke,” which caused some confusion but didn’t deter our momentum.
Our album “Ethnic Stew” followed, featuring the hit single “Tribe,” which captured our essence.
We charted in major publications and even topped charts in places like Todendorf, Germany, and Washington, D.C. Our tours spanned the U.S., Europe, and the Far East, connecting with diverse audiences. Despite personnel changes, we released two more albums: “Tribal Bumpin’” and “Dedication.”
Although Tribe temporarily disbanded, our legacy as the original Tribe endures.
Fast-forward to 2025, and I’m thrilled to announce our comeback with “Tribe IV Resurrection,” under,
